TEENAGED kayaker Jessica Fox has bravely battled a back injury in France to keep her Olympic preparations on track.
The 18-year-old Australian qualified for her second whitewater World Cup final in successive weeks on the road to the London.
Fox, seventh in the opening World Cup race in Cardiff last weekend, qualified fifth for the women’s K1 final in the Pyrenees at Pau but then struggled to produce her best and finished eighth.
Fox struggled midway through the course, losing plenty of time on one gate, and ultimately finished 9.15 seconds behind Spanish victor Maialen Chourraut (108.34).
But Fox’s father, Australian Canoeing’s high-performance manager Richard, said the effort to make two straight finals was a major positive heading into London.
World champion Corinna Kuhnle and Slovakian Jana Dukatova, who grabbed silver last week in Cardiff, both crashed out in the semi-final stage.
Fox did not blame the back injury which saw her withdraw
“It wasn’t an inhibitor,” her father said.
“She’s disappointed with the outcome and the performance but it’s still encouraging in terms of the progression that she hasn’t put out her best yet, and she’s learning a lot along the way.”
France-born Lucien Dalfour produced the highlight for Australia in Pau as he beat many of his former countrymen to win bronze in the men’s K1 slalom.
Dalfour wasn’t eligible for 2012 Olympic selection as he does not have Australian citizenship but is aiming to represent the country at the 2016 Games in Brazil.
